Cataracts FAQs

As you age, you’re at greater risk of developing eye conditions that can hinder your sight. Cataracts are one of those conditions. Cataracts can affect the clarity of your vision, making it difficult to perform daily tasks. At Mead EyeCare & EyeWear in Woodbury, MN, we are answering a few frequently asked questions about cataract symptoms and treatment.

.

What Is A Cataract?

A cataract is the clouding of the lens of your eye. Cataracts can hinder your sight by causing you to have blurred or opaque vision. They generally take years to grow, which is why they’re more prominent in older people. Advanced cataracts can obscure your vision to the point that you need cataract surgery.

Who’s Susceptible to Develop Cataracts?

Seniors are at greater risk of developing cataracts. However, young people and even newborns can develop this condition.

What Causes Cataracts?

Various factors contribute to the growth of cataracts. As you grow older, chemical changes may occur inside the lens of your eye, causing it to cloud over. Cataracts can also develop due to an eye injury or disease. Overexposure to the sun, cigarette smoke, and the use of some types of medications can increase your risk of developing cataracts. They can also be hereditary.

What Are Some Common Symptoms of Cataracts?

Small cataracts may have no symptoms at all. As cataracts grow, however, you may start experiencing such symptoms as blurred or cloudy vision, loss of color perception, and sensitivity to glaring lights. Advanced cataracts can make it difficult to read, watch TV, do computer work, or perform other daily tasks.

How Do Optometrists Diagnose Cataracts?

Our Woodbury, MN, optometrists can detect cataracts during an eye exam. If the cataracts are small, we will monitor them over the years to see how they affect your vision. Once cataracts begin to interfere with your lifestyle, it’s time for cataract surgery.

How Are Cataracts Treated?

Cataracts can be removed by surgery. Surgery is usually suggested when they begin to interfere with daily activities. Our Woodbury, MN, optometrists can recommend an experienced eye surgeon to perform the procedure.

Until then, we may suggest that you wear prescription eyewear to improve your vision. Once eyewear is no longer effective in improving your sight, surgery is your remaining option to restore your vision.

Is Cataract Surgery Risky?

All surgeries come with risks. Modern advances in the field of ophthalmology, however, have greatly reduced cataract surgery risks, making it a safe and effective means of treating them.
